Hey There Pretty Birds,
Remember that I mentioned that one of the reasons why I accepted my husband’s suggestion that we stay at Strawberry Hill during our Easter holidays was because its located near Kingston? Well, Hellshire Beach is one of the places near Kingston that I really wanted to visit during our trip. Minutes from Portmore, it’s a place that I used to visit with my friends when I was in University and frequently returned home. Colorful, authentic, energetically overstimulating, raw – it holds so many precious memories: long afternoons frolicking in its turquoise water; hours spent digging my toes into its soft, white sand (sadly the beach has eroded into a brief strip due to tropical storms); countless yummy meals of fresh fish accompanied by festival or friend dumpling; and sweet, sweet reggae tunes blasting over amped- up stereo systems.
It was incredible seeing the beach again, being there with Piero Jackson and my mother and aunt. Another happy experience to add to many other dreamy memories. And other than mother nature’s evolution of the coast, nothing’s changed much. Hellshire is still crazy, sweet, and full of soul. And ok, maybe it’s a little bit more chaotic. But home is where the heart is, and love is love.
