There’s no way around it: periods aren’t fun. While menstruation is a natural process and one you shouldn’t be ashamed of, it’s not exactly a pleasant time. There are uncomfortable or sometimes painful symptoms that come with periods, like cramps and unpleasant digestive issues. Or what about when your flow soils your favorite underwear or bed sheets. I’ve been there and it sucks. I can’t tell you how many times while on my period, I’ve woken up in the morning to see that my splotches of red on my once pristine sheets.
Period Underwear to the Rescue
Thankfully, period panties now exist. While others swear by pads, tampons, and menstrual cups to manage their period, I cannot live without my period panties. On my particularly heavy days, I double up on protection and wear a heavy-duty pad or tampon as well as period-proof underwear. Since doing so, I haven’t had a problem leaking during the night.
Despite what you may believe, they don’t feel or function like adult diapers. On the contrary, they look and feel like regular underwear, so you don’t have to worry about them being uncomfortable and bulky like pads. They only difference is they have a special layer that prevents blood from seeping through. They’re also reusable and can be washed like normal underwear, making them super cost-effective as well as a great choice if you want to cut back on waste.
In my experience, period panties are a godsend. Not only are they super comfortable and protective, they also come in a range of colors and patterns to choose from. Below are four of my favorite brands that carry a range of options for different flows, bodies, and budgets.
Thinx Period Underwear
The first period underwear I’ve ever tried was from Thinx, a feminine hygiene company founded by Miki Agrawal. The brand really put period panties on the map and made me a serious fan of them. I particularly love that they carry a wide range of styles from thongs (yes, thongs!) to high-waisted panties (my personal favorite) in sizes XXS to 3XL. They also sell activewear with the same leak proof technology found in their underwear. Best of all, though, they have a money back guarantee that allows you to try their products for 60 days, and if you don’t think it works, you can return it and get your money back.
Ruby Love Period Underwear
Of all the brands I’ve tried, Ruby Love has the most variety in their period underwear with a super robust range of colors. Additionally, they sell swimwear for adults and teens with the same period-proof technology, so you don’t have to worry about your period ruining your vacation. The swimwear looks like any other bathing suits and are available from junior to 3XL. And if that wasn’t awesome enough, Ruby Love also carries boxer briefs designed with a soft, leak-proof cup for people who feel more comfortable in underwear with more coverage.
Dear Kate Period Underwear
If you’re super active, Dear Kate is for you! They carry activewear and dancewear that protect you from leaking during your period, as well period panties that are really comfortable, affordable, and come in a lot of sizes (XS – 3X). Most of the options can also absorb a good amount of blood — up to two tampons worth, according to the site. They also feature every day folks — you know, people that look you and me — on their site to showcase their styles. Right now as I’m writing this, there are women on the website with visibly stretch marks and scars. In my opinion, that makes the shopping experience all the better because you can actually visualize yourself in the underwear.
Knix Period Underwear
Founded by Joanna Griffiths, Knix carries a wide range of sizes (S – XXL) and always features people of all sizes in their advertisements, which I really appreciate. They also carry a wide range of styles in a variety of colors (including nudes for darker skin tones) and fun patterns. My favorite item from them has to be the The Dream Short. It’s a super absorbent Black shorts with built-in coverage featuring our patented leakproof technology that absorbs the equivalent of 3 tampons worth of blood. It’s great for those heavy days!
