The Perfect Yellow Dress for My Favorite West Village
Tamu McPherson | Friday October 5th 2018
Ok, so here is how it all started: I wasn’t searching for the perfect Gen-Z yellow dress with a chic nod to the Yves Saint Laurent 1967 Safari collection.
I was just taking a break after shooting a look with Darrel Hunter (stay tuned) before attending the stellar Tome NYC SS19 show. Since we were working in Soho that morning*, I thought why not pop into Opening Ceremony. It’d been seasons since I last visited, and in testimony to its great reputation, I always find the most fantastic pieces. Plus, the associates there are always a great source of style inspiration. The young woman who I worked with was emanating so much flavor, I took note of every detail of her look like it was recipe from a cook book. Come to think of it, I actually met Lizzy Okpo of William Okpo there eons ago – so happy to see how amazing she and her sister are doing. And oh! Our very own Anja Tyson worked with the commercial team there back in the day. Follow her on Instagram, if you haven’t already, to get a taste of her gorgeous style.

But I digress, back to the dress.
Finding it, along with a super Dries Van Noten print skirt with feather detail (look 39), actually worked out so smoothly. As always, when I’m in NY, I make it a point to visit my favorite fashion forward boutiques, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh is always a first stop. This last trip was super hectic, as I was only in town for five days and had a majorly crammed schedule. As each day passed, it became more evident that I wasn’t going to make it to pick up the one or two things that level up the effortlessly cool factor in my closet each season. So, when I came across this perfect dress, stars immediately popped into my eyes. I don’t know about you, but I will always be a sucker for a lace-up front safari-inspired anything. This pretty, mellow shade of yellow is just a bonus eye-catcher. The wool fabric makes for the most ideal fall transition piece – it almost feels like a coat dress and can definitely take you day through night in an autumn breeze. Pair it with these Tibi mock-croc boots (or a similar style, like I’ve done here) and one of the season’s best faux fur jackets and you’re set to stroll your way into winter weather. I feel a major Outfit Goals moment coming on here! Ehh!
So, what’s left? I’ll tell you that Darell and I decided to shoot in the West Village, truly my favorite Manhattan neighborhood. When I see these images, I imagine myself waiting outside our townhouse for Piero and the Lob(v)ster to come downstairs, and then walking to Sant Ambroeus on West 4th for a nice Italian brunch. Then, I’ll pop by the flower shop on Hudson for a small bouquet for my Staud bucket bag. Afterwards, we’ll walk up to the Whitney and check out “Mary Corse, A Survey in Light,” before it wraps up on November 25th. Now, isn’t this the perfect outfit for all of that?
*Darrel Hunter and I shot in iconic neighborhoods for our NYFW collaboration. This story, shot in the West Village, is the first installment of the four.
