The Ginger-Lemon-Turmeric Detox Drink

Dear Pretty Birds,

Getting home after a vacation always seems like the right time to compile a list of autumn resolutions. Every year, as summer draws to a close, I find myself dealing with the usual few extra kilos I put on each time I venture out to southern Italy. I consider them my personal souvenir of a place where it is impossible to avoid indulging in greasy flat bread or high calorie snacks. On a rainy, late August afternoon, while I was up to my neck in emails and deadlines, and after having had one coffee too many, I felt the irrepressible need to devise a detox plan before officially converting to a vice-based diet, designed for those of us with a sweet tooth. For years now, Internet has offered countless last-minute-get-back-into-shape solutions along with infinite recipes for grannys home remedies, magic concoctions capable of instantly cleansing our bodies, forever deleting even the slightest trace of blemishes or imperfections. After having spent a couple of hours reading articles written by top dietitians and trainers on the fitness scene, I suddenly received an unexpected phone call. It was none other than the infamous Grandma (mine!), goddess of miraculous brews and fountainhead of culinary knowledge. After a warm exchange of affectionate greetings, I decided to risk asking our family guru a question: what was the secret to having enviable skin and a silhouette on par with everyone’s favorite diva, Sofia (Loren), at the age of… (never ask a lady her age!). Grandma, in her usual warm, calming voice, satisfied at her own wisdom, answered: Love, theres nothing better than a cup of warm water with lemon, ginger and turmeric. Shocked at the simplicity of her answer and eager to try this elixir of life, I thanked her and affectionately bid her goodbye as is customary in such cases. The following morning, with all of the above mentioned ingredients at hand, I tried out the recipe. Besides proving an easy solution, I was astonished at the incredible benefits contained in the slightly sour beverage. The brew was undoubtedly good, especially with its incredible hint of ginger which I deem necessary. Being the curious person that I am, I rushed over to my library in search of some rather dusty health and wellness books. Furiously flipping through pages on end, I finally came across the answer to all my questions. We all know how effective ginger and lemon are as far as cleansing goes, but turmeric can easily be compared to the superhero of all spices, the ultimate wellness element. I couldn’t keep this miraculous discovery from you and just had to let you in on every single benefit this magic beverage possesses.




Lemons offer numerous benefits thanks to the fact that they are packed with elements like vitamin C, vitamin B, phosphorous, proteins and flavonoids. Indeed, flavonoids contain antioxidants and anti-cancer properties. Lemons are very useful for helping to cure indigestion and constipation, easing toothache and gingivitis, making skin glow, stimulating diuresis, facilitating weight loss and fighting throat infections caused by cold weather. 



This root contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C, E, and J, as well as essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and selenium. Ginger is also very rich in amino acids and helps fight infection and colds, ease menstrual cramps, relax muscles, cleanse the liver and even helps fight diabetes.



Just a hint of this golden powder, with its antioxidant properties which are 300 times greater than those of vitamin E, is enough for its presence to be detected. Turmeric is an anti-cancer spice which also fights acne and skin infections, lowers “bad” cholesterol and facilitates the production of “good” cholesterol. It also alleviates colds and congestion as well as contrasting problems caused by gastritis.

With a grin spreading across my face and a greater awareness of the super powers these ingredients possess, I suggest starting the morning off with a cup of this health and beauty elixir.
