The products that make it into my daily ritual may constantly be changing, but my steps are always basically the same: cleanse, tone, moisturize. Toners tend to get a bad rap, because some formulas can lead to serious dehydration. Alcohol-based toners especially can cause sebum overproduction by striping the skin of natural oils – so your skin will be left feeling super clean, but also stripped of its moisture. The alternative if a water-based toner, which is the perfect layering base before applying oil-based products, which means that all of those serums you have been going crazy for these last few years will work perfectly. When paired with the right water-based toner, your face oil will become a proper moisturizer.
How to Choose a Facial Toner
We have come a long way from the days of alcohol-astringent based toners. These days, toners act similarly to water, but jam-packed with beneficial ingredients like acids, glycerin, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. In all their glory, toners deliver quick hydration while also removing dead cells on the surface of the skin, leaving you with that sacred glow. I know for me, swiping that toner-soaked cotton over my face picks up the remaining dirt and makeup that seem to hold onto my skin no matter what cleanser I am using. Since I also suffer from blackheads, toner removes the excess oil that clogs my pores causing blackheads. Some toners are even designed to help restore the pH balance of your skin. Whatever your skin needs – hydration, removal of excess oil, acne-prone, pore tightening – there is a toner out there for you.
I’ve been known to switch it up for an exciting new product, but these five toners are the most heavily rotated in my medicine cabinet:
Josh Rosebrook’s line is steadily on my list of favorites, and I’ll always find a way to work a product or two into my lineup. This all-in-one hydrator, toner, and light moisturizer is the perfect spray to help all your serums, balms, and creams really seep in and moisturize deeply. Organic vitamin-infused aloe water and a fatty acids base lowers your skin’s surface tension to penetrate your dermal layer and enhance the delivery of hydration, antioxidants and other nutrients to the skin.
The name says it all… COQ-10 is one antioxidant I am constantly hunting for in my food or supplements, so why not just lay it straight on my face? This toner rebalances your skin’s pH level with its hyaluronic acid and Aloe Vera base. Alcohol free – which means no drying out your skin – and the mix of COQ-10 and Sage protects the skin from pollution and environmental aggressors.
Pre-pregnancy, I suffered from acne-prone skin, and from time to time I still fall into the same rut. This clearing facial mist not only infuses your skin with breakout-minimizing actives, but also delivers oil-free hydration. It contains Willow Bark, similar to salicylic acid, clears your pimple-prone skin and minimizes the appearance of pores. Also, packed with antioxidants from the green tea and peppermint, which help remove excess oil and reduce dullness.
If you buy facial products based on smell (ahem, Tamu!!!!), you will love the clean and fresh herbal aroma. With its organic Aloe Vera gel, chamomile and Atlantic sea kelp, the formula is both an astringent and an anti-inflammatory. It is also effective on skin after sun exposure.
Whenever I walk into CAP Beauty, I implicitly trust whatever they tell me to use – no questions asked. After my first visit to their Hollywood location, I fell in love with Marie Veronique after trying their Pure + E.O. Free Oil Cleanser. So, obviously, when I swung by recently looking for a toner, and they recommended this, I did not hesitate. Packed with powerful Phyto-extracts that soothe inflammation and address the underlying causes of congestion and hyperpigmentation. It deals with inflammation with micronutrients that heal and lighten. CAP Beauty recommended that I mix my serum directly with the mist for the best hydration absorption.
