Venus Williams

In the news this week By Team ATPB

With the state of current affairs in the US and around the world, we’re staying up to date on as much news as we can. Like many of you, we devour everything that is published on the Trump administration in an effort to keep informed about its horrible policies and so that we can share them with everyone we know (read about them every month in Nia’s “F*ck Donald Trump” series). Here’s a list of the articles and headlines about Trump and beyond that caught our attention this weekend. Check back every Monday and Friday for weekly updates. And, please share any articles that catch your attention, because sharing information is one of the most important things you can do at this moment.

U.S. Charges 412, Including Doctors, in $1.3 Billion Health Fraud

Hundreds of people nationwide, including dozens of doctors, have been charged in health care fraud prosecutions, accused of collectively defrauding the government of $1.3 billion, the Justice Department said on Thursday. Nearly one-third of the 412 charged were accused of opioid-related crimes. The health care providers, about 50 of them doctors, billed Medicare and Medicaid for drugs that were never purchased; collected money for false rehabilitation treatments and tests; and gave out prescriptions for cash, according to prosecutors.

Visas have been granted to a group of Afghan girls scheduled to take part in a global robotics contest in Washington next week, following a public uproar over news that their initial application was twice turned down. The struggles faced by the team of six — from building their robot to overcoming gender-role barriers, and a literal 500-mile journey they had to take to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul for their visa application, made national headlines in the U.S. after the initial refusal became news.

Democrat launches bid to impeach Trump.

A California Democrat has filed an article of impeachment against US President Donald Trump in a long shot bid to remove the president from office. Brad Sherman filed the article on Wednesday, accusing Trump of obstructing investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, in part by firing former FBI Director James Comey.

Donald Trump Jr. invited to testify before Congress.

The heads of the Senate judiciary committee are writing a letter to Donald Trump Jr. Thursday requesting that he testify before the committee, Chairman Chuck Grassley told CNN. This is following revelations related to Trump Jr.’s email exchange about meeting with a Russian lawyer regarding potentially damaging information against Hillary Clinton.
