In the wonderful world of pants, this season offers so many flattering silhouettes, so many pretty colors, so many can’t-wait-to-put-this-on-my-body fabrications – and, as an immensely satisfying result, sooo many styling options.
I was so excited at the prospect of rounding up my favorite SS18 trousers for you, and, imagining myself strolling the streets of Ravello later this summer in a nice little edit, I began screen-grabbing my favorite styles months ago (how else was I to entertain myself during my No Shopping Challenge?). You should see my camera roll, there are more pictures of pants than pictures of PJ. And, whenever I want to show off photos of the apple of my eye, I have to scroll through a neverending grid of slacks to find my son. Everyone is probably convinced that I have misplaced my priorities, but I will tell you that if they are misplaced, I will probably find them in the back pocket of all of one of these fabulous pairs of pants.
Anyway, two months ago, I started to build an edit of trousers that would be my go-to rotation for the entire season. And as the packages started to arrive, I realized I could not get away with not putting together a special round up of my summer staple for you! I sat at our new office table and visualized all of the great new trousers populating my closet and thought about how we would photograph them. As I plotted my styling, I made a surprising realization. There were all these great trousers that I was daydreaming about for months – the ones that I wanted to share with you – but they were nowhere near the variety that I had catalogued in my camera roll. They were essentially one style… the one style that I always gravitate towards. Yeah, you guessed it: high waist, wide leg.
Some may see this as a styling fail, but I see this as proof of concept – I have professed my love for this style time and time again here, and the choice shows my consistency in aesthetic. I love the 70’s so much, and high waists, bell bottoms and wide legs never get old for me. Plus, as I’ve gushed a million times before: they create the illusion of super-long legs and always flatter the waistline. As a bonus, the ones that I’ve featured here actually touch on all of the season’s best trouser trends. Let’s have a look.
High waist corset trouser by BDG at Urban Outfiters, top by Silvia Tcherassi (sale), boots by Celine, basket by Maria La Rosa , sunnies by And Other Stories.
I’ve been wanting to try out the corset trend since last season, but I never found the perfect pair of trousers. I fell for these berry-colored jeans the moment I spotted them hanging in Urban Outfitters. I’ve already worn them a ton, but I had so much fun styling them here with a cropped top in a slightly more unexpected color combination. The ultra-high waist makes the pairing easy for those of us who are shy about exposing skin, and the overall look kind of resembles a jumpsuit.
If you are excited about all of the lemon yellow out there this season, then these high waist, tailored slacks in feel-good citron are just for you. This time, I opted for an architectural sleeve to add a little drama to mix. Tuck the top lower into the trousers and you’ve got the perfect office look – then, once you’ve nailed your presentation, head out for an evening of celebratory drinks. You deserve it!
This week marked the 20th Anniversary of HBO’s first airing of ‘Sex and the City’. Channeling my inner Carrie and putting to use a little of the Patricia-Field-styling-magic of television’s favorite girl gang, a little whimsy went a long way in these darling cropped high waist pants cinched with a utility belt.
This look is my homage to the sporty-chic girl in us all. The slit on the side and waist piping reminds me of the original Adidas tear-away track pants, which I’ve I’ve paired with the silkiest and thinnest tank top ever. Wish I had bought it in bulk, it layers perfectly and feels so good on.
Over the endless winter, did anyone else forget how much they loved colored denim?? I did! This flirty flared leg is the perfect length to wear easily with flats without them dragging across the pavement. They’ll also look lovely with a swimsuit – go for a printed v-neck one piece or any of these season’s bikini tops.
Oh honey… apart from the fact that I’m feeling myself in this lewk, everyone should, as a rule, have an urban safari ensemble in their closet. White, high waist, utility belt, legs flowing like liquid to the pavement, these trousers errything.
I will be living my best life this season in all of these high waist, wide leg trousers. What about you – you joining my pant party?
