Foundation: How to Choose the Right One For Your Skin Type by Michela Marra
Hi Pretty Birds,
Do you know the secret to discovering which foundation is most suited for your skin? Surely, some time or other, you chose the wrong one and were unable to use it. This post is meant to provide you with some useful tips on making the right choice without wasting your money.
First of all you really need to know your skin
Dry, oily or combination? If your skin is dry, choose a cream or liquid version, if you have oily skin a mineral mattifying foundation is best. Mineral foundation is actually perfect for all skin types because it contains softening ingredients so you can choose according to your personal preferences. If you have youthful skin, use a BB cream or tinted cream.
Choosing the right shade
The right shade corresponds to your skin tone. Your goal is to avoid creating a contrast between the areas of your skin with foundation and those without. Don’t commit the classic error of testing out foundation on your wrist or hand: it should be spread onto your neck or jaw. Pay attention to the effect created when exposed to natural light as well as artificial or neon light. Never buy products on an impulse; it is also preferable to apply the product all over your face and see what it looks like on your skin after a few hours.
How to apply your foundation
We prefer using targeted brushes which guarantee an even, error-free application in just a few strokes. Alternately, you can apply your foundation with your hands. We don’t recommend sponges as they must be cleaned after each use and they absorb large amounts of the product.
When should concealer be used?
Finally, the age-old question: when should we apply concealer? The answer is: always after having applied your foundation, in order to get a controlled result. Follow the same rules you apply when using foundation − never go overboard with quantity to avoid highlighting expression lines or creating a mask-like effect which will weigh down your skin.
If, however, you do exaggerate don’t panic: blot your face with a makeup sponge, apply a hydrating spray and spread the foundation with your fingers a second time. Pay careful attention to the area around your nose and the corners of your mouth, where an accumulation of the product could create bothersome spots. Hydrate your skin well before applying foundation.
