I have wanted to experience sweet Antiguan Vibes ever since my Caribbean Student Association days at Binghamton University. One of our club members was Antiguan and her tales of life on the island and nearby twin island Barbuda always charmed me. Earlier this year, after my husband shot down my idea of a mini-road trip in California, I asked a couple of friends for some suggestions for islands other than Jamaica to visit with PJ on his Spring break. After considering a nice list of tropical paradises, we decided to visit Jumby Bay, a gorgeous private island resort in Antigua. Since my husband is the type of traveler who likes to check in and stay put, I made sure that I set aside a day where I could explore a little of the local scene. To document (and guide) my petit escape, I enlisted Vanessa Hall, a brilliant Antiguan phtographer. Below is our visual diary of the day we spent exploring Antigua’s tiny villages.
Would I recommend a trip to this West Indian getaway? Absolutely. It is definitely a gem and full of breathtaking beauty. The one characteristic that won me over is probably its stunning crystalline clear water. Rain or shine, the sea is always pretty, in any direction you look. And it was actually after a full day of rain, while sitting with my husband for an afternoon snack and looking out at the sunny beach and calm turquoise sea that the idea of retiring in the Caribbean finally hit me. I guess it was really a matter of time before I realized that my plans for retirement would undoubtedly include spending part of the year in this neck of the woods. I have many years in front of me to hash out the logistics, but add a seasonal rental in Antigua to the mix.
Please enjoy my Antiguan Vibes!
Colorful houses are an essential feature of island landscapes. Here I am in front of the bold, patchwork style home of the spunkiest little old lady I’ve ever met. And later, I take a walk up the road to a makeshift fence that borders lush banana trees. In these images I’m wearing a Tibi dress, my favorite Celine sunnies, J.W. Anderson for Style.com earrings, and Jucca sandals.
No island trip would be complete without a stop at the local fruit stand. Clemmy’s finger rows and pineapples sweeten up our tropical vibes! In this image I wear a blouse by Rosie Assoulin, Miu Miu trousers and Chloe sunnies. I found my earrings at a beach market in Italy.
Carlisle Bay, located in south-west Antigua, is just one of the Islands impressive 365 beaches. We drove up to find a group of kids chatting next to an old boat and the scene became the backdrop to the following images. Dress by MSGM and paired with Miu Miu sunnies.
Cheers Antigua! UNTIL NEXT TIME.
