I was born in southern Italy, in a town situated at the foot of a mountain. My mother still lives there and every time I go back (not very often, to be honest) it’s always a pleasure waking up in the mornings, opening the window and feeling immersed in nature — certainly different from downtown Milan! Mountains are part of my DNA and my past. Even if most of my summer vacations were spent by the seaside, my father never missed an occasion to take us all around Italy, including its highest peaks: from Trentino to Valle d’Aosta, there’s not a single mountain he didn’t know.
Life however, unfolds in mysterious ways and now we all live in different places. Some of us live in the South, some in Milan and others travel between London and Dubai. However, the mountain is still an obsession we share and whenever we get the chance, we try to spend a weekend together somewhere in the Alps. When I am unable to make arrangements with my family, I have my friends and partner who share my passion for the mountains… and that explains how I earned my black belt in last-minute packing for vacations in the mountains, especially in summer when a weekend escape from the city becomes a matter of life or death.
From sun protection (crucial!) to refreshing cleansers and nourishing creams, I’ve compiled a list of the 15 beauty essentials that you must not leave home without if your destination is snow capped.
Let’s start with your face: protection is INDISPENSABLE. Here’s what you’ll find in my beauty bag.
Mineral Matte UV Defense SPF 30 by Skinceuticals
With a formula containing filters that are 100% mineral based, this sun cream is enriched with titanium dioxide – to provide maximum protection against UVA and UVB rays – and aerated silica technology which absorbs sebum. The bonus? It withstands sweat and humidity and mattifies skin all day long.
Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 20 by Shiseido
Protects your lips from the harmful effects of UVA/UVB rays while moisturizing and protecting them from becoming dry and rough. It is not heavy nor will it leave any visible traces.
Avène Cream SPF50+
Contains a complex of active photoprotectors which ensure ideal protection against both short and long UVB-UVA rays. It’s rich, creamy texture provides deep hydration and leaves skin feeling soft.
Ginzing Energy Boosting Tinted Moisturizer by Origins
With its coffee and ginseng-based formula, this sun cream is a multi-tasking product which protects, hydrates, energizes and leaves skin looking radiant.
After spending a day in the sun, it is important to hydrate your face and/or soothe skin. These are the products I recommend.
Crème de la Mer
Provides deep hydration and brightens skin. After a day in the sun, warm a small amount of cream between your fingertips until it becomes transparent, then apply to clean, dry skin and tap gently until absorbed.
DEFENCE SUN Soothing aftersun cream by BioNike
Enriched with PRO-REPAIR COMPLEX which promotes natural mechanisms of biological skin repair, it also offers protection which continues after sunset.
Hydrating Gel Mask by Comodynes
Aloe vera and Oatmeal extracts make this blue mask ideal for alleviating redness and for hydrating all skin types. It replenishes skin’s vigour after a day in the mountains.
Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant by Elizabeth Arden
Don’t hesitate to put this in your beauty bag: it deeply moisturizes even the driest lips and provides long-lasting protection for skin. It can be also be useful for small scrapes or burns.
Darphin All-Day Hydrating Hand and Nail Cream
Enriched with Rose water, this cream moisturizes hands and nails all day long.
Do you love walking? Bring along some products to treat skin redness, swollen legs and sore muscles.
Comfort Zone Natural Remedies Arnica
An excellent natural remedy for those of you who are very active. It contains Eucalyptus and Cinnamon essential oils and is perfect for every part of your body. It also contains a special ingredient, Arnica Montana, which is found in the mountains.
Latte Jambes Lourdes by Clarins
If your legs feel tired after a day of trekking, this is the perfect product for you: it has a delicate, creamy consistency and will create a refreshing, relaxing effect if you apply the product all over your legs and massage vigorously.
I’ve listed these cleansers at the bottom of the list but cleansing is the first step in any beauty routine: don’t think that by escaping city smog you can skip cleansing your face in the mountains… 😉
Susanna Kaufmann Body Gel Refreshing
Formulated with natural ingredients from Austrian forests, this product contains ivy, which improves skin’s elasticity; aloe vera, which refreshes the skin; and echinacea, which alleviates burns.
Greek Mountain Tea Face Apivita
Hailing from Greece, the Mountain Tea product line has products that are suitable for the whole body. It includes a shower gel, and a moisturizing fluid containing Greek Mountain tea to help tone and hydrate while exerting an antioxidant action on skin.
Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser
It cleanses, purifies, leaves skin looking brighter and minimizes pores, and is made from 100% natural ingredients.
If you love wearing makeup, don’t go without your favorite eyeshadows and lipsticks. My suggestion is to always use waterproof products that can withstand water and sweat. I, for example, cannot live without this eyeliner.
INGLOT Volume & Waterproof Mascara
It separates and thickens lashes, ensuring volume and definition without clumping. It is water and perspiration-resistant.
