Behind The Scenes at Lagos Fashion Week

Pretty Posts |

I have wanted to make the trip to Lagos Fashion Week for some time, my interest having been sparked season after season by its bosslady founder Omoyemi Akerele. From a distance I have had tastes of Nigeria here and there – the NYFW shows of designers Lisa Folawiyo and Maki Oh, which I attend religiously, stylish creatives like Oroma Elewa and Folasade Adeoso, whose cosmopolitan African aesthetic knocks me over each time I see them – but as they say, there ain’t nothing like the real thing baby, and this season I was fortunate enough to experience this convergence of important Afromodern design talent in person.

The Perfect Yellow Dress for My Favorite West Village

Ok, so here is how it all started: I wasn’t searching for the perfect Gen-Z yellow dress with a chic nod to the Yves Saint Laurent 1967 Safari collection.

I was just taking a break after shooting a look with Darrel Hunter (stay tuned) before attending the stellar Tome NYC SS19 show. Since we were working in Soho that morning*, I thought why not pop into Opening Ceremony. It’d been seasons since I last visited, and in testimony to its great reputation, I always find the most fantastic pieces. Plus, the associates there are always a great source of style inspiration. The young woman who I worked with was emanating so much flavor, I took note of every detail of her look like it was recipe from a cook book. Come to think of it, I actually met Lizzy Okpo of William Okpo there eons ago – so happy to see how amazing she and her sister are doing. And oh! Our very own Anja Tyson worked with the commercial team there back in the day. Follow her on Instagram, if you haven’t already, to get a taste of her gorgeous style.

As a hardcore denim addict, it is very seldom that I venture out of my comfort zone into the land of a traditional “trouser”. If I am feeling a little spicy, you may occasionally catch me in a printed pant, but on real inspection they are almost invariably printed jeans. Having started my career in the denim industry and being married to Mr. Denim Man, it is an excruciating task to slip on anything that is not indigo. So when I do decide to take the leap outside my denim bubble, you’d better believe I stand by more is more. Leave the simple looks for the denim.

Lo and behold, after seeing the amazing more-is-more attitude on the streets of NYFW, I raced out to my favorite spots for some retail therapy. Embodying the persona of the city itself, high-energy and risk-taking street style exploded on the streets of New York. Observing from afar, I scrolled through our favorite street style photographers on Instagram for some inspo, only to be stopped in my tracks by our one and only head honcho Tamu and her Rosie Assoulin marble psychedelic trousers, which left me lusting for a closet spruce up in the form of some playful flares.
